“Map of Adventure” in "The Beginning of the Armadilloes"
Dear list members,
The “Map of Adventure” is written, pictured and signed by “Lancelot Mayhew A M”. What do you think this “A M” means? Master of arts? But if so, does it mean that Lancelot Mayhew was the ship’s doctor? (It seems that Medicinae Baccalaureus etc. degrees appear only in early XIX) Besides, Lancelot Mayhew’s name is written as “Lancet” on the upper signature and something like “Lancelt” on the lower one (please see files attached). And dealing with Kipling, I cannot but suspect that any word may have some second meaning...)
It doesn’t seem to be ‘Anno Mundi’ because we see in the text “Of ye fifty-seven adventurers wh leaved Bristol – Ap. 17. 1503” (i.e. A.D.).
Furthermore, I am not sure that it is really “D” (please see file attached).
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
With best wishes to all,
Yan Shapiro
