At 15:50 in this program it is stated that place-names with "maid" in them correlate with places in Germany with the same element and thus say something about the origin of settlers. I have been struggling since the broadcast to understand what was meant by this. Any suggestions?
A good example of how such a name can arise by corruption is Maidscross Hill in Lakenheath in Suffolk, which can be clearly traced back to a
Mayyhewcruch in 1330, and so derives from the name Matthew.
