In Suffolk I have noted these compounds, surely meaning `(wind)mill-mound':
le Oldemillemunt 1380 (Rendlesham)
le Mellemont 1402 (Swilland)
Mellemuntlond 1434 (Stonham Aspal)
But what exactly is the element munt or
mont? OED mound, n.2 is only recorded in the required sense 3a `an artificially constructed elevation or heap of earth, stones, debris, etc.;' from 1635, and
mount, n.1 (a merger of OE and French words, unrelated to "mound") has the sense (according to OED 4a) `an artificial mound or heap of earth, stones, etc.' only from 1581. Does anyone have other example of
millemont which might clarify things? (MED seems to have nothing relevant.)
