I have just come across the fact - if it is a fact - that the River Brit in Dorset was previously known as the river Wooth. It runs through a small settlement known as Wooth. Has anybody any idea where this name might come from? Wooth is not to be found in Ekwall. If it is simply a variant of "wood", it seems odd as a river-name.
