Perhaps the plains derive from the Flemish artisans who helped build the 'wool churches' of Norfolk from c. the 11th century onwards? The relatively early (1550s) use of the word by Nicholas Sotherton in his account of Kett's rebellion suggests it may already have been in use before the arrival of refugees from the Low Countries in the late 16th century.
